A wonderful sight to see

Sometimes a single photograph tells a story all of its own.

Recently Antonio's mum Ana shared a wonderful photo of Antonio and Hilario together during a follow-up appointment with Professor Nitin Verma in Dili, Timor-Leste. Also pictured are the boys' mums, Ana and Nivenia, whose shared ROMAC journey has brought their families together.

Professor Verma, an Australian ophthalmologist, founded the eye clinic in Dili and continues to support the development of sustainable eye care and training in Timor-Leste. He was instrumental in the initial assessment of both boys and continues to provide follow-up care during his regular visits to the clinic.

Although Antonio and Hilario had never met before travelling to Sydney for treatment through ROMAC, they now share a special connection through their experiences. Antonio travelled to Sydney for lens replacement surgery, while Hilario received treatment for a retinal detachment. Both boys have since returned home to Timor-Leste, where they continue to receive ongoing follow-up care.

The photograph is a heartwarming reminder that the impact of ROMAC extends well beyond a child's time in Australia. It reflects not only the care they received but also the friendships formed, the dedication of those who continue to support them, and the hope that ongoing medical care brings to children and their families.

Moments like these are only possible because of the generosity of Rotarians, our medical teams, volunteers, host families and supporters who work together to provide life-changing medical care for children throughout our region.

A wonderful sight to see indeed.
