Surgeons in two different cities — and the ROMAC team — stepped up to help when a missed connecting flight put her life in jeopardy on the journey from the Solomon Islands.
The ROMAC team is in daily contact with Xinyue’s mother, Mase (pictured above at Xinyue’s bedside) to support her wellbeing during this challenging time. ROMAC is deeply connected to all the children in our care.
At Mase's request, we joined her and the PICU medical team online for a comprehensive update on Xinyue’s progress, with an interpreter present to ensure clear communication.
Xinyue’s recovery has progressed well, and the medical team is preparing to remove her breathing tube over the next day or two, depending on her strength and lung performance.
While this is a wonderful step forward, the clinical team notes there are still hurdles to overcome. It will be a few more weeks before Xinyue is ready to take oral feeds.
The PICU staff highly commended Mase for the incredible job she is doing, spending hours at the bedside to be fully present for her baby's care.

Baby Xinyue needed urgent surgery but a missed connecting flight meant her life was in jeopardy. Then surgeons in different cities — and the ROMAC team — stepped up to help.
