Tom cleared to return home after successful surgery

Tom has been cleared to return home to Aneityum Island, Vanuatu, after successful surgery and treatment to correct his club feet.

It has been a long journey but a deeply rewarding one knowing Tom can now walk like other children.

Travel arrangements have been finalised and members of the Eastern Committee are due to farewell Tom and his mother Marie on Saturday 27 June.

Tom (pictured above at his 3rd Birthday Party) has made wonderful progress, each day gaining strength, independence and confidence. He is now walking with the support of his Ankle Foot Orthotics (AFOs) and a new pair of sneakers, an important milestone in his recovery journey.

Tom will need to wear the orthotics for the next six months to provide essential support and help maintain proper alignment of his feet.

ROMAC bought him a pair of sandals as it is difficult to put shoes on with his orthotics. One of the sandal straps was too tight. Enter Sam from Cobblestone who added a velcro strip to the sandals, offered to make any other adjustments, and refused to take any money when told who they were for.

Watching him move around with increasing confidence has been a great source of encouragement for his mother, the medical team and members of the Eastern Committee who have regularly visited and supported the family throughout their stay.

A special highlight this month was celebrating Tom’s third birthday. Tom and Marie were joined by several members of the Eastern Committee and staff from RMH to mark the occasion. The celebration was made even more memorable thanks to the generosity of the RMH staff who provided a wonderful Paw Patrol birthday cake that brought a huge smile to Tom’s face.

Tom was also delighted to receive many gifts and birthday surprises. Among the most treasured was a superhero cape and book from Capes 4 Kids. Through the gift of a cape, the organisation empowers children with courage, love and support helping them face the challenges of medical treatment with confidence and imagination.

His excitement and joy were evident throughout the celebration as he proudly showed off his presents and enjoyed the special attention. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to celebrate not only his birthday but also the remarkable progress he has made during his time in Australia.

The day was a joyful occasion for all involved and a powerful reminder of how far Tom has come. As he prepares to return home Tom leaves with stronger feet, growing confidence and the support and best wishes of everyone who has been part of his journey.
