Janewly, aged 23 months, from Santo Island in Vanuatu, arrived in Sydney on 8 February with her mother Lien, accompanied by medical escort Dr Tyna from Port Vila.
Her surgery was to correct a Ventricular Septal Defect, a hole in the septum of the heart which can cause respiratory distress, feeding difficulties, developmental issues and heart murmur.
Janewly and Lien settled into Ronald McDonald House at Westmead where they were supported with daily visits by Rotarians from the Eastern Region Committee.
Janewly underwent several important tests and specialist consultations including appointments with cardiologist Dr Phillip Roberts and heart surgeon Dr Johann Brink. She also attended the dental clinic, completed an anaesthetic review and further imaging as part of pre-surgical preparation.
After the operation, Dr Brink said he was very pleased with how the surgery went. He expects Janewly to recover well with the next 24 to 48 hours being important as she begins her recovery.
We are deeply grateful for the wonderful support of our Eastern Region team, especially Maggie Thorn, who has been instrumental in caring for Janewly and Lien. Maggie has generously given her time to ensure they have everything they need attending appointments and providing ongoing support every step of the way.

After two serious injuries in four years to the same eye, Antonio needed advanced surgery unavailable in Timor-Leste. ROMAC and Rotarians in Sydney stepped in to help.

An 18-month-old Timor-Leste boy’s life has been saved by surgery in a case which shows the value of coordination between medical experts, volunteers, translators, pastoral workers, and community organisations.

Six-month-old Baby Hilario from Timor-Leste was born prematurely with bilateral retinopathy of prematurity, a serious condition affecting both eyes.
